Bedchamber

Picture: Bedchamber

The electress slept beneath a ceiling picture of the flower goddess Flora by Joseph Werner. The imperial bed showing the room’s original function is from a later period. On either side of the bed are the electoral couple Max Emanuel and Therese Kunigunde.

The portraits were painted in 1704 in the year of the elector’s biggest military defeat. The painting by François Roettier above the fireplace is an allegory of Max Emanuel’s return from exile in France in 1715. Bavaria is presenting the elector with his sceptre and electoral hat and restoring him to his office.
